As Journey’s HR director, I often hear, “Journey seems like a great place to work,” followed by, “Do you have any openings?” The answer is that we are always interested in talented people, but we do screen carefully. So, if you’re interested in working at Journey, you should:
- Be able to put your own dishes in the dishwasher.
- Enjoy using crayons to doodle, design, draw wireframes, sign production orders and, most importantly, color outside the lines.
- Play team sports. Well, not really, but you do have to be a team player. That means dropping off a FedEx or two or three.
- Communicate. All the time. Clearly. Over-communicate if need be. It’s not a skill just for project managers.
- Support a gossip-free work zone.
- Experience an increase in heart rate when thinking of using iPads, smartphones and laptops to tell compelling stories.
- Enjoy collaborating with colleagues to brainstorm and problem-solve over high-caloric food and drink.
- Feel it’s imperative to treat people with kindness and respect.
- Be able to handle Michael Scott-like moments with finesse.
- Have a knack for listening to what clients want and hearing what they really need.
